This might not seem like a very important question, but when you consider how large and how old some of these dragons are–and the fact that dragons never stop growing, even if growth slows significantly after about five years–this definitely presents a conundrum.
How does a massive dragon eat without depopulating all the animals in Enayra?
The answer is they don’t.
The Earth Mother provides for her children. Most dragons will actually cease consuming food on a regular basis at about five years of age, when their growth begins to slow.
Dragons, also being inherently magical, can sustain themselves entirely on the mana energy provided by their “mother” and progenitor, who is also inherently magical.
It’s unknown of dragon growth slows after five years because they stop eating, or if they stop eating because they stop growing. Dragons themselves aren’t certain–it’s just an instinct for them to start drawing sustenance from elsewhere.
Now that doesn’t mean that dragons older than five can’t eat, just that they don’t need to eat regularly, or sometimes at all, because calories cease to mean anything for them.
It’s also kept some of the oldest, largest dragons safe from the Altimaran hunting parties, and the White Dragon Clan from dying out in the near barren, frozen ice lands of northern Anglum.
